Breakfast Topic: Who'd be next to die in WoW Faction Leader Survivor?

Before that, we (apparently) killed off Kael'thas, the Blood Elf leader, and Zul'jin, one of the Troll leaders. Heck, Fandral Staghelm, while not exactly a leader, was just killed off in 4.2. Blizzard isn't afraid to kill off its own creations, so who do you think Blizz will kill off in the future?

I'm sure Magatha Grimtotem is up next. Revenge is sort of a theme we got going on in WoW, and I doubt that old meatloaf-to-be will be useful in the next expansions as anything other than a raid boss. But she can't be the only one.

Personally, I'm betting on Sylvanas. Something big is brewing, and despite the fan hate of Garrosh, I have a severe doubt Metzen will let us off the hook on that guy any time soon. The Undead are going to need to be brought further into the Horde, and unless we're getting a third faction (/pray), I'd be we'll be finally putting that Undead to rest.

Who else do you think will be going the way of Cairne? Will the death knights' leader, serving no known purpose, get the axe next? Will Thrall perhaps die for real? Or will someone bump off the cheese master
Filed under: ,Breakfast Topic: Who'd be next to die in WoW Faction Leader Survivor

Every Sunday, Chase Christian invites you to discuss the finer side of the paladin class: the holy specialization. Feel free to with any questions you want answered, like why paladins are so awesome.

Holy paladins have several features that make them powerful healers in PVP environments. Our diverse utility spells provide us with capabilities that our rivals can only dream of, and we have plenty of cooldowns that can counter our opponents' actions. While holy paladins are generally considered to be strong PVP healers, we aren't without our weaknesses. Our most notable flaw is our complete reliance on a single school of magic -- holy.

All of our spells and abilities are tied to one school of magic, which means that interrupts are incredibly potent at shutting down holy paladins. Even, which feels like a physical attack, is tied to the holy school. Interrupts are obviously potent against any caster, but holy paladins are especially hurt since we don't have any alternative spells to fall back onto. Mages can still cast Frost Nova if their Arcane Blast gets Kicked, and shaman can use any of their fire spells after getting a heal hit by Pummel. Holy paladins are useless when interrupted, which provides us with a unique set of challenges.
The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You're playing the game, you're fighting the bosses, you know the how -- but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft.

One of the biggest questions people have in regards to the Shattering patch that took place at the end of Wrath of the Lich King is just how much time passed in game during those events. Unfortunately, there aren't any concrete answers to that question, which makes trying to muddle out time lines a little more difficult than usual. The official time line on the original World of Warcraft website was removed when the site underwent its major facelift, and a new time line was never implemented.

However, taking a look at the old time line over on Wowpedia seems to indicate that Blizzard likes patches to last approximately one year in the Warcraft time line. So classic World of Warcraft and all the events we encountered, from Molten Core to the original incarnation of Naxxramas, took place over the span of one year in the time line. The Burning Crusade and all events associated with it also took one year to complete. It stands to reason that Wrath of the Lich King would follow the same trend. But again, without concrete confirmation, we've got no way of really knowing for certain.

That said, the novel The Shattering seems to take place over the course of at least a few months or so, if not more, so there was a bit of a time jump between old-world Azeroth and the Azeroth that was implemented in patch 4.0.3a. And now, let's continue on with what went down in that novel, shall we?

Today's Know Your Lore contains pretty much every possible spoiler that exists for the novel The Shattering by Christie Golden. If you're avoiding spoilers, turn away now! Continue reading Know Your Lore: The Shattering

All the World's a Stage: Plot points for Argent Crusaders

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. In World of Warcraft, that player is you! Each weekAnne Stickney brings you All the World's a Stage with helpful hints, tips and tricks on the art of roleplay in WoW.

Once upon a time in classic World of Warcraft, there was an organization called the Argent Dawn. This organization made its home in the heart of the Plaguelands ruined by the Scourge during Warcraft 3 and sought to fight back and cure the land of the plague that ailed it. But the Argent Dawn could not do it alone, which is where players both Alliance and Horde came into the picture. In the Plaguelands, both factions worked for the same cause, and the Argent Dawn oversaw it all.

Later, the Argent Dawn evolved into the Argent Crusade, setting its sights on Northrend and the Lich King's throne. Those loyal to the Argent Dawn readily joined the Argent Crusade and traveled to the chilly peaks of Icecrown in the hopes of putting an end to the Lich King. After a long war, the mission was a success, and the Argent Crusade returned home -- but what of those who belong to the Argent Crusade? What does an Argent Crusader have to do these days?

For roleplayers with characters who belong to this organization, there may be a little less to work with than there was in Wrath of the Lich King; the Argent Crusade isn't really a highlight of Cataclysm. But that doesn't mean there aren't points to consider when playing your courageous hero.Continue reading All the World's a Stage: Plot points for Argent Crusaders Filed under: All the World's a Stage (Roleplaying)All the World's a Stage: Plot points for Argent Crusaders originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sun

According to reports on the forums and the above video, GM Xel spawned Deathwing on the PTR and had him return to Stormwind to deliver another blow to the Alliance this Friday at the Harbor.

It appears that the version of Deathwing spawned is the current one that flies around Azeroth and burns zones to the ground, killing all NPCs, mobs, and players. We can even see the player in the video get the Achievement. There is no indication this is the version of Deathwing that will spawn in the raids. We didn't see any players on his back, which is something we know will be possible during the fight.

We believe the video and reports are credible. And while it happened on the PTR, there is little possibility of this happening on the live realms. "Fly around and randomly destroy zones" Deathwing doesn't hit the cities, and GMs rarely, if ever, make themselves known on the live realms. However on the PTR, as the video above shows, things are completely different.

Thanks to WoWCynwise and NDMiko for the Twitter tip and video.

Back in the day, I played a paladin, I was in a raiding guild, and I tanked. Lord, how I tanked. I tanked 5-mans. I tanked heroics. I tanked raids. And I loved it! But eventually the guild collapsed, my pally tank became a retadin, and then I took a break.

After I came back to WoW and spent a considerable amount of time with a variety of alts, I realized I missed tanking. So I started a brand new warrior. He was going to be a prot god. I grabbed the right gear. I took the right talents. I was amazing ... when I was alone questing. See, I hadn't tanked in a while, and I was on a new server, so I didn't have the friendly support of a guild group to help me get my feet wet. When I got my first Deadmines quest, I queued in the Dungeon Finder -- and I immediately unqueued. Just one more level. I'd be ready to tank in one more level.

But I didn't tank The Deadmines. Then I didn't tank any other dungeons. And now I'm 70 and still telling myself, One more level. Just one more level.

It's not that I don't know how to tank, and I know that tanking is easier now than ever before, thanks to the recent threat changes. But I also know that PUGs can be heartless and unforgiving. And for some reason, I'm afraid of that heartlessness and ... unforgivingness. Of course, I should just join a guild, but before I get to know them, it'll be just like a PUG, except that my performance will actually matter, which makes it worse. I'm sure that eventually my desire to tank will overcome my fear of tanking, but not today. Maybe at 71.

Two new jewelcrafting vendors have been added on the PTR. For Alliance, you'll find Farrah Facet at the trainers in Stormwind, for Horde, you can find Taryssa Lazuria in the jewelcrafting hut. Currently the huts on the PTR in Orgrimmar are overrun with piles of Ethereal junk, leaving poor Taryssa literally buried under a pile of crates, but she is there.

New epic gems include Queen's Garnet, Lightstone, Deepholm Iolite, Lava Coral, Shadow Spinel, and Elven Peridot. There's a twist with these jewelcrafting recipes, however. Each recipe costs five jewelcrafting tokens, compared to the three required for rare gem cuts. On top of that, the vendors sell the Tome of Burning Jewels, which will teach you a random Cataclysm epic gem recipe. The cost for the tome is only four tokens, so savvy jewelcrafters can spend their tokens on the cuts they need immediately, and then just purchase the Tome to save on token costs when they no longer care what recipe they are getting.

Check out the gallery below for screenshots of all epic recipes, and thank you to The Godmother fromAlt:Ernative for sending in the tip!

Gallery: Patch 4.3 PTR: New epic Jewelcrafting recipes

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Totem Talk for elemental, enhancement, and restoration shaman. Josh Myers once only tackled the hard questions about enhancement but has recently expanded his sphere of responsibility to all shaman DPS specs. (And no, two-handed enhancement is still never coming back.)

As I sit writing this, there's a huge storm raging outside my house. Thunderstorm's customary 45-second cooldown isn't in effect, and there's so much lightning flashing it's sort of like Pikachus are having a Pokemon battle in the sky. Oh, and there's rain, too. Not the nice, healing kind that you like to stand in, either. I'm thinking this storm might be the response of elemental shaman everywhere to today's latest 4.3 changes, when this gem was found on the PTR. (Please note: This isn't reflected in Blizzard's official patch notes yet, but the change is up on test realms.)

Your damaging spells have a 30% chance to reduce the remaining cooldown on your Fire Elemental Totem by 4 sec.

source

Yeah, that happened. We kind of had a feeling it would, since the T12 set bonus is so ridiculously good -- like, it's so good that if it were a cake or any other form of dessert, it would give you diabetes just from looking at it. My earliest estimates of the set bonus said it was something like a 3,000 DPS increase. By BIS heroic gear, it's more like a 6,000 DPS increase from a single set bonus. For gear balance issues, that bonus was too good. Blizzard generally intends set bonuses to be within the ballpark of 5% DPS increases. This was more like 15% to 20%.Continue reading Totem Talk: Elemental tier 12 nerfed on the PTRFiled under: Shaman, Analysis / Opinion, Raiding, (Shaman) Totem Talk, CataclysmTotem Talk: Elemental tier 12 nerfed on the PTR originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Oct 2011 20:00:00 EST. Despite repeated blows to the head from dragons, demons, Old Gods and whatever that thing over there was, Matthew Rossi will be your host.

I admit I was hoping there would be more changes to warriors to talk about by now. At least so far, the patch 4.3 PTR has been fairly quiet on the warrior front. Sure, fury got a nerf, and a fairly large one. Fury's been the melee spec that's actually done good damage this raid tier, so I knew the writing was on the wall for it. What I didn't expect was the particular blend of buff and nerf that the spec has seen. Meanwhile, arms and protection have not changed at all, and this far into the PTR, I find that kind of baffling.

Nerfing Dual-Wield Specialization to remove the 5% physical damage bonus -- that, I understand. It's an easy Band-Aid to rip off of the spec to flat-out reduce all damage done, and with all physical attack power buffs adding 20% instead of 10% melee AP in 4.3, it's likely we won't really even feel it. What that change does is lower fury's base so that it doesn't scale better than every other melee once the AP changes are in. No, I'm not surprised at all by that, and I wouldn't be surprised if Precision gets a nerf as well to reduce our white damage slightly. While I absolutely do not agree with these changes, believe them justified in any way, or support them, I at least understand them.Continue reading The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Patch 4.3 and its implicationsFiled under: Warrior, Analysis / Opinion, Raiding, CataclysmThe Care and Feeding of Warriors: Patch 4.3 and its implications originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Oct 2011 18:00:00 EST.
Arcane Brilliance: News and notes from the patch 4.3 PTR

Every week, WoW Insider brings you Arcane Brilliance for arcane, fire and frost mages. This week we come bearing information from the patch 4.3 PTR. Many warlocks died to bring you this information. Well, many warlocks died; bringing you this information had very little to do with that.

Coming soon.

Those words have mocked me for what feels like forever but in reality was only a couple weeks. When the initial patch notes were released for the patch 4.3 PTR, other classes got changes. Other classes had new things to discuss, new topics to broach on the official forums and then engage in rational, polite discourse about. But not mages. Under our section of the patch notes, we got those two hateful words, Blizzard's dubious trademark phrase.

Coming soon.

But no more! We can cease our waiting, our trembling, anxious vigil. For the latest build of the PTR has delivered to us a handful of discussion-worthy changes. Let's all release our collective bated breath and move forward as a class. Because, my fellow mages: Soon, apparently, is now.Continue reading Arcane Brilliance: News and notes from the patch 4.3 PTRFiled under: Mage, Analysis / Opinion, (Mage) Arcane BrillianceArcane Brilliance: News and notes from the patch 4.3 PTR originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Oct 2011 16:00:00 EST.
"There are no simple solutions" -- Design diversity in WoW

In a recent post on the forums, Bashiok responded to the idea that 1.35% of all WoW players have completed normal Firelands and what that does or does not mean for the recent changes implemented to the raid instance. It's a very interesting and information-filled post that I think deserves a thorough examination, as it reveals elements of Blizzard's current design philosophy and how and why it chooses to alter raids from their initial difficulty levels.

I intend to go over the entire post carefully, but here are some highlights to ponder up front:

The 1.35% number is just plain wrong. Blizzard has its own numbers that it's not going to share, but the 1.35% is probably as accurate as could be expected without access to Blizzard's internal data gathering.

Blizzard's design intent is to make content for all of the playerbase. "It's both a blessing and a curse that the WoW player base is as large and diverse as it is."

Players raid for many different reasons, some challenge, others loot, and others just to see the content. Some players are happy if they just see a boss once, while others enjoy weekly clearing.

The idea of being willing to wipe a hundred or more times to clear a boss, a staple of the raider mentality for years, is not appealing to most players.

OK, so now that we've picked out a few highlights, let's go over the entire post and really consider the implications of designing for as many players as possible.Continue reading "There are no simple solutions" -- Design diversity in WoWFiled under: Analysis / Opinion, News items, Lore, Hotfixes"There are no simple solutions" -- Design diversity in WoW originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Oct 2011 14:00:00 EST.

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Mike Sacco will be your host today.

A short but sweet ditty from The Head and The Heart. Anyone else think that blonde gal is super-cute? Also, guy on the keyboard: I do the exact same thing when the claps come up when I'm listening to the song. My face when it happened in the video: :O -> :D -> :3

Daedalus asked:

So, after reading the latest leader story, I was left with one question: is there any lore around "Remembrance Day" besides in Blood of Our Fathers? Do we know when it's celebrated? And do you think there's any chance we'll see it as an in-game holiday?

It appears to just be window dressing for the short story. The holiday exists, I'm sure, within the context of the game's lore now, but whether it becomes an actual in-game holiday is anyone's guess. It seems to serve a similar purpose to the Harvest Festival, though. Or at least what the Harvest Festival used to be, where you'd go talk to ... was it Uther or something? I hate holidays.

Continue reading The Queue: Cats and DogsFiled under: The QueueThe Queue: Cats and Dogs originally appeared on WoW Insider on Sat, 15 Oct 2011 12:00:00 EST.
